My niece Summer will be three on the 16th of May.For her birthday I decided to build this Radio Special wagon with a little bit of a hot rod / rat-rod flair. I started out with a rusty Radio Special wagon I picked out of a scrap pile. Stripped it down to the tub and sand blasted it. I noticed though that after media blasting the bottom of the tub was so pitted it looked like Swiss cheese so I cut out the base and replaced it with a nice piece of Baltic-birch cabinet grade ply-wood sanded it down and hit it with a few coats of cherry polyurethane and then with a few more coats of high gloss clear all that is left now it to do a final wet sand and polish to make it look like glass.I masked off the rusted out side shot it with matte clear to seal in the rust and Radio Special graphic.I then shot the inside with 2001 Ford Powder Pistachio which was left over from painting a Focus.I plan on attaching the wood bottom with ten button head screws from the side. I imagine it will be plenty strong enough to support Summers 45 lbs. The wheels are some new old stock Allis Chalmers yard tractor deck wheels. Axles are made from simple 1/2 inch bolts and nickle plated acorn nuts. When I picked up the acorn nuts at ACE hardware I was going to get some fancier chrome plated acorn nuts but they wanted $6.29 a piece and for this gift it was too rich for my blood.
